Everyone wants to know the best way to learn Python. It's a great language, with tons of useful features and career paths from backend dev to data science.

For as many reasons as there are to learn Python, there are probably an equivalent number of ways to learn it. You can already tell because this is an article and not a tweet x post, but the best method does not have a one-word answer.

There's no single best way... if you're an experienced coder, the best path for you will be quite different from the best way to learn Python for a complete beginner.

The short answer: learn the fundamentals in a structured order, write code from the first lesson, and start a small project before you feel completely ready. The exact course, book, or video series matters less than whether it makes you practice.

If you want to learn Python quickly, you're in for a rude awakening. The truth is that learning any programming language is hard, as I have reason to know. I've learned three over the years: R, Python, and SQL.

Every time I tried to learn them, I found that books didn't help me, courses didn't motivate me, and instructors didn't teach me the way I needed to be taught. I could have slogged through and eventually learned these languages, but you know what taught me Python fast? Having my own project.

I did it by accident. It's not like I asked myself, "Hm, Zulie, how best to learn Python?" Instead, I had a driving need to know whether asking questions in my Instagram captions meant more engagement on my cat pictures. R is not great at scraping and Python is, so I needed to learn Python.

Pick a goal that gives you a reason to keep going when the material starts to get dry. It could be automating a repetitive task, analyzing a small dataset, or building a text-based game. Keep the first version tiny. "Rename every file in this folder" can be a nice little project. "Build the next Instagram"... is too much for you, sorry.

2. Learn the Fundamentals in Order

Random tutorials can teach you random facts. They rarely teach you what to learn next.

Start with one structured curriculum that covers:

  • Variables, values, and basic operators
  • Functions and scope
  • Conditions and loops
  • Lists, dictionaries, and sets
  • Errors, testing, and debugging
  • Type hints and basic problem solving

While you're looking at options that include textbooks, lectures, and self-driven work, you might decide that you benefit from interactive teaching. I think it's one of the most efficient ways to learn Python because you have to write code instead of nodding along to a video.

3. Practice Every Concept

Watching someone write Python is not the same as writing Python. After each lesson, close the example and rebuild it yourself. Change an input, break something on purpose, and explain why the output changed.

  3. Run the program and inspect the output.
  4. Fix one mistake before moving on.

It isn't a practical starting point for someone who has never written code. Once you understand functions, conditions, loops, and collections, though, it is a useful way to sharpen those skills. Use challenge sites as practice, but they can't be your full blown curriculum.

If you use an AI assistant, make it explain an error, ask you questions, or review code you already wrote. Letting it produce every solution gives the AI practice, not you.

4. Build Projects Before You Feel Ready

If you want to learn Python fast, the best way is to find a project that you really care about and that will drive you nuts unless you solve it. Position yourself so that the only obstacle standing between you and the answer you want is your Python skills. That's how I picked up the basics super fast.

Don't jump straight from print("Hello, world!") to a giant independent app. Use this:

  1. Finish a guided project where the major steps are laid out for you.
  2. Change one requirement or add one feature without the guide.
  3. Build a similarly sized project from a blank file.

Your first independent project should use concepts you already know. A command-line quiz, expense tracker, file organizer, or simple text adventure is enough. Finishing something small teaches you more than abandoning something impressive.

When you get stuck, read the error from the bottom up, add temporary print() calls, and reduce the problem until you can explain it. Search the exact error only after you understand which line failed.

5. Specialize After the Basics

Python can pull you toward backend development, automation, data analysis, machine learning, testing, or a dozen other fields. You do not need to learn all of them.

Once you can write small programs with functions, collections, error handling, and tests, choose the direction that matches the reason you picked in step one. Then learn the libraries and tools for that direction while building a larger project.

  • Backend development: HTTP, APIs, databases, and a web framework such as Django, Flask, or FastAPI
  • Automation: files, command-line tools, web requests, and scheduled scripts
  • Data: Jupyter, NumPy, pandas, visualization, and statistics
  • Machine learning: data preparation, scikit-learn, model evaluation, and then deeper frameworks if you need them

Framework hopping is the advanced version of tutorial hopping. Pick one direction long enough to build and finish something useful.

How Long Does It Take to Learn Python?

It depends on what you mean by "learn."

You can understand Python's basic syntax and write small programs in a few weeks of consistent practice. Boot.dev's beginner Python course, for example, contains about 30 hours of material. Becoming employable takes much longer because a job requires more than Python syntax: you'll need projects, development tools, computer science fundamentals, and practice solving unfamiliar problems.

Can You Learn Python for Free?

Yes. Python itself, its official documentation, and many complete courses are free. Free learning still needs structure, exercises, and feedback; a pile of bookmarks is not a curriculum.

The best way to learn Python still depends on a few practical factors:

  • How much time do you have each week?

  • Do you want an interactive guide, or can you keep yourself moving?
  • Are you new to programming, or are you adding Python to an existing tool belt?

There isn't one right way. There is a reliable process: follow a structured path, write lots of code, finish progressively harder projects, and use your overarching goal to decide what comes next.
